What 'Help Uganda' does?

The children of the Ssese Islands face very particular difficulties living in remote islands in unstable communities plagued by social problems.

'Help for children in Uganda' was established in September 2004 by
Liz Humphreys from Oxford in response to appeals by the Ssese Islands local community workers from the most remote islands in the area. The communities identified 110 of their most needy children. We are now working with those children though the numbers have increased. Some children we support live with elderly, frail grandparents or sick or dying relatives with no extended family. Others are in situations of great poverty. We need to be in a position to help children in such precarious circumstances.

We support the children by paying boarding fees where necessary, providing school lunches, providing uniforms, shoes, exercise books, pens, pencils and, in cases of extreme poverty, a total package of requirements.

We enable children to access health care and provide basic health education.

We house a few children with no near relatives and work to find and then relocate the children to relatives willing to look after them.
